Goodnews Energy to Supply RECs to Institute for Green Transformation to Achieve RE100

October 20, 2025

Pioneering a Sustainable Energy Transition Model through Community-Based Renewable Procurement

October 20, 2025 – Seoul, Republic of Korea — Goodnews Energy (CEO Jongkyu Kim, https://goodnews.energy), an energy transition service company, announced that it has signed a Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) supply agreement with the Institute for Green Transformation (Director Byungkwon Kim, http://igt.or.kr) to support the institute’s RE100 commitment for 2025.

Under this agreement, the Institute for Green Transformation has completed the purchase of RECs equivalent to its electricity consumption for the first half of 2025 and plans to cover 100% of its annual energy use with renewable energy in partnership with Goodnews Energy.

A subsidiary of 60Hertz, Goodnews Energy is a renewable energy distribution startup and social venture specializing in corporate renewable energy sourcing. With cumulative renewable energy procurement exceeding 47 GWh, the company supports major Korean corporations—including Samsung Electronics and Kakao—in achieving their RE100 goals and energy transition initiatives. It also operates a “Renewable Energy Subscription Service” designed for SMEs and small business facilities, expanding inclusive participation in the renewable energy market.

The Institute for Green Transformation, a private think tank focused on climate and energy policy, launched its RE100 journey not only as a research initiative but also as a commitment to sustainability in its own operations. Notably, this REC purchase was sourced from local citizen solar cooperatives, creating a community-linked procurement model that reinforces both environmental and social value.

Citizen solar cooperatives are jointly owned by local residents, who receive dividends from power generation revenues. This structure enables a virtuous cycle in which renewable energy profits are reinvested in the local economy, strengthening community-based sustainability.

“Our first step toward RE100 is not just an act of energy transition, but a move to expand the social foundation of renewable transformation through solidarity with local communities,” said Byungkwon Kim, Director of the Institute for Green Transformation. “We will continue to practice climate action not only in research and policy proposals but also in our daily operations.”

Minyoung Song, Director at Goodnews Energy, commented, “We are honored to partner with the Institute for Green Transformation on its journey toward renewable transition. This collaboration goes beyond a simple REC purchase—it introduces a meaningful cooperative model linking institutions with citizen-led renewable producers. We plan to further expand programs that make RE100 more accessible and practical for various organizations.”

Going forward, Goodnews Energy aims to develop specialized RE100 support programs for research institutions, NGOs, and non-profit organizations, demonstrating that the global RE100 movement can be effectively implemented beyond corporations—across the public and civil sectors as well.
